Sermon Series at Lincoln Road Bible Chapel
Life can make it hard to stay faithful to God. The pressure to walk away—or to reshape faith into something more comfortable—is real. It might come from indifferent friends or heckling peers. It might come from the feeling that you’re going on your own, or from the appeal of easier choices, or the niggling feeling that God isn’t even there for you.
This struggle isn’t new.
Throughout history, God’s people have faced the same temptation: to give up, to compromise, or to drift.
At Lincoln Road Bible Chapel, we’re beginning a new series: “Faithful to the Faithful God.” It explores the times and the struggles of one man who was given the task of calling out an unfaithful nation and pleading with them to return to their God. This was Jeremiah, who lived around 600 years before Christ in the kingdom of Judah.
The “Book of Jeremiah” in the Bible records many of the messages, prayers, and events of Jeremiah’s life. We are going to cover a selection of these over the next two months. We will see how the people of Judah were faithless to God in their religious and political choices, Jeremiah’s deep grief and honest complaints to God, and God’s faithfulness to his people and promises even as he brings them disaster and deportation.
Series Plan:
- Jeremiah’s call and commission – Jeremiah 1
- Broken covenant and faithlessness of the people – Jeremiah 2
- False faith and empty worship – Jeremiah 7 & 26
- Faithfulness vs worldly alliances – Jeremiah 16 & 27
- Jeremiah’s prayers of complaint – Jeremiah 20:1–14; 15:15–21; 11:18–12:6.
- False prophets, truth and lies – Jeremiah 23:9–22; 28:1–17
- Hope amidst judgement, promise of a new covenant – Jeremiah 31:31–34; 32:36–41
- Living with Hope in exile – Jeremiah 29
The life and times of Jeremiah speak to us today. We are challenged to think about what faithfulness to the faithful God looks like for ourselves. Whether you’re feeling discouraged, tempted to chase other loves, or simply unsure how to follow God in a complicated world—this series is for you.
