The Potter’s Hands – Chae

Recently, I have been meditating on Jeremiah 18:1–6, one of the well-known stories of the potter and the clay. In this passage, Jeremiah was told to go down to the potter’s house, and when he arrived, he saw a potter working with clay.

In verse 4, we are told that the vessel made of clay was spoiled and ruined, and the potter noticed that something was wrong with it. However, he did not throw it away. Instead, he rebuilt it, reshaped it, and made it again into another vessel, as seemed good to the potter. Then, in verses 5-6, God speaks to Jeremiah about Israel, saying that God is like the potter Jeremiah had just seen, and Israel is in His hands. Just as the Israelites were in God’s hands, so are we.

Do you believe that your life is in God’s hands? Are there any areas in your life where you feel broken, delayed, or uncertain? How might God be reshaping you in this season?

It is important for us to remember that our lives are in God’s hands and to daily confess His sovereignty over every part of our lives. Even when it is hard to recognise God’s shaping hands, God is still at work. There may be seasons when we feel broken, delayed, or uncertain, just like the vessel that was spoiled. But the Potter never abandons the clay.

This gives us great comfort.. God does not look at our brokenness and simply throw us away. He continues to rebuild us, reshape us, and form us according to His good purpose. Sometimes His work in us may feel uncomfortable, and sometimes we may not understand what He is doing. Yet, we can trust that His hands are loving hands, wise hands, and faithful hands.

So why don’t we sing of His goodness over our lives? As we sing, let us allow the truth of who God is to capture our hearts again. Let us think about His love. Let us think about His goodness.

Blessings, Chae
